History of Bay Marine

Bay Marine is a subchapter S corporation that was founded in 1975 by President, Robert E. Henry.  Bob gained an equal partner in David J. Bonney in 1993.  Dave had been employed by the firm since 1990.  The firm size has varied over the years.  The company started as a single man operation and has seen several periods of expansion with a one time complement of six personnel.   Bob Henry died in December 2003 leaving Dave as sole owner.  Bob was a wonderful person, a great friend and a superb Naval Architect.  A page dedicated to the memory of Bob is under construction.

We call upon consultants to subcontract in the case of increased workload.  Increasingly over the past 5 years, we have used specialists in the areas of Speed/Powering (HydroComp, Inc.), Seakeeping (Ship Motion Associates), Model Testing and Hydrodynamics (Hydronautics Research, Inc.), Electrical Design (DC Maritime Technologies), Finite Element Analysis (Archon Engineering) and HVAC (Cunningham & Walker).  This allows us to vary our workload without the need to bring on additional full time help.  In addition, it allows us to use some of the best minds in the business.

Since its founding, Bay Marine has been dedicated to providing naval architecture and marine engineering services to the small to mid size commercial fleet.  As with many companies within the marine industry, Bay Marine has adapted to provide services to the markets most in need at any given time.  We have been involved with the design of fishing vessels, oil skimming vessels, research boats, barges, ferries as well as commercial passenger and sail training vessels.  We have worked with a variety of materials from steel and aluminum to wood and fiberglass.  We pride ourselves on developing unique solutions to solve customers needs while maintaining cost efficiency in first cost and life cycle costs.  We both draw on personal, practical experience in building vessels, and in Bob’s case, operation of vessels.  The experience in building/operating and maintaining vessels allows a valuable perspective when designing a boat.  We know how to design for ease of assembly and for long term maintenance.
